Making shaped bread is not something new, nor is it hard. You can shape the dough by hand or use a cookie cutter like I did. You can use your favorite homemade bread recipe or try a new one. The key is to have fun. I received this Mickey Mouse cookie cutter as part of my participation in the DisneySide @Home Celebration. I wondered how well it work to shape bread because one of my ideas was to serve sandwiches at the party. Since I was making homemade bread anyway, I decided to give it a shot and see how well it worked it – which as you can see, it worked out fine. Here is how I did it.
The first step was to oil my cookie cutter so it did not stick to the dough. I had already allowed my dough to rise, so all I did was spread it out on the cookie sheet until it was the thickness I wanted (think refrigerated dinner roll dough size), then I used the cookie cutter to cut through the dough.
I removed the excess dough from the outside of the cookie cutter. I thought this would make the process easier and keep my Mickey Mouse head from getting messed up as I pulled the dough away. It worked perfectly!
Then I removed the cookie cutter and continued cutting out Mickey Mouse heads until I had enough to fill the cookie sheet. I cut them on the cookie sheet so I did not have to try to transfer them. I really did not want to chance the dough getting messed up. They did rise slightly as I was continuing to cut additional bread dough. They also rose more in the oven, but that was ok. They turned out fine and it was easy for me to tell that they were Mickey Mouse heads.
