I love using cumin on my food – in fact, I love spicy food. The problem is unless I grow the herb or spice myself – or find it whole and grind it – most spices I find are just bland. They have no flavor, no taste and no smell. That is not the way spices are meant to be. I also prefer using organic ingredients when I can find them thus when the opportunity came along to try the Jiva USDA Organic Cumin Power I jumped at the chance.
With high hopes, I waited for the package to arrive and instantly ripped the box open. I could tell this was no ordinary ho-hum cumin powder. The color of the cumin was vibrant which told me it was fresher than what you typically see at the grocery store. I opened the re-sealable bag and was shocked by the intense smell of the cumin. I was also a bit disappointed as the bag tore thus I could not re-seal it. All was not lost however, I simply put the cumin in another container.
After inhaling the intense, spicy aroma that I found completely delightful I began thinking about the best way to try some of the cumin. I anticipated a mouth watering, spicy taste. Tacos came to mind – but since there are other spices I use in tacos I decided I did not want to make a recipe where the cumin would blend and possibly be lost. I decided on roasted cumin diced potatoes. There are no words to describe how incredible the taste was. I ate most of the six potatoes I diced that night.
The next day my husband took some of the remaining potatoes to work with him where he microwaved them for lunch. He loved the potatoes – but I didn’t know until the next day after I had finished off the remaining potatoes that he wanted more. He loved the way the cumin made the potatoes taste. Now I have made cumin potatoes before using cumin from the grocery store and he never raved about the potatoes like he did these. It just proves fresh, organic spices are naturally better – and make everything they are on taste better.
