How Coconut Oil Helps With Natural Dog Care

Coconut oil is derived from mature coconuts, so it is a product found in nature.

However, not all coconut oil is organic, so if that is important to you, purchase an organic brand.

Coconut oil is known to help improve both your dogs skin and their coat, both when taken internally and when applied topically.

It also helps improve digestion, reduces allergic reactions unless you happen to have a dog who is allergic to coconut oil and increases energy levels naturally.

Coconut oil works great as an easy to swallow coating for your dogs pills as well.

Coconut oil works so well because it is easily absorbed into the GI Tract which means it goes directly to the liver where it metabolizes into energy your dog can use.

How To Feed Coconut Oil To Dogs

It is important to understand how to offer coconut oil to your dog as well as how much coconut oil to offer because you can overdo it.

Offer small dogs 1/4 teaspoon per dose, medium dogs 1 teaspoon per dose and large dogs up to 1 Tablespoon per dose.

As a rule of thumb give them the coconut oil straight or offer coconut oil treats once or twice a day.

Too much coconut oil is known to cause kidney problems in dogs, so try mixing it into their food or make homemade treats that incorporate coconut oil into them such as the frozen doggie popsicle recipe below.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup Coconut oil
  • 1 cup flax seed oil
  • 1 cup mashed banana (optional)
  • 1 cup all natural peanut butter (optional)
  • Mint leaves, shredded (optional)

Instructions

  • Melt the coconut oil.
  • Add in the flax seed oil.
  • Add in the mashed banana, peanut butter and mint leaves if desired.
  • Mix all the ingredients until they are well combined.
  • Pour the mixture – or the melted coconut oil by itself – into small silicone containers. Try using shaped containers for holiday treats.
  • Freeze the filled containers until the shapes are solid.
  • Pop the frozen treats out and place them in a Ziplock back quickly, then put them back into the freezer. These do melt fast once they are exposed to room temperature, so work quickly.
  • Place a single treat on top of your dogs food once or twice per day.

Final Thoughts

Making home remedies for your dog using coconut oil is a great way to get your pet to snack on a treat that is good for them and has health benefits without adding unnatural supplements to their diet.

However, it is important to remember that coconut oil has a high fat content and does not contain any nutritional value.

It is always a good idea to talk to your vet first before trying something new with your dog.

Your dog will especially appreciate the coconut oil frozen doggie popsicles during the heat of the summer and if your dog is anything like mine, a frozen treat is a hit any time of the year.

Just remember to limit the amount of coconut oil your dog gets per day and keep an eye on your dog in the beginning to make sure the addition of coconut oil to his or her diet does not cause any adverse reactions.
