Raise Happy, Healthy Backyard Chickens With Purina® Organic Poultry Feed

Sharing is caring!

This post has been sponsored by Purina Animal Nutrition, as such I received free product from Purina to share my opinion with my readers. However, my opinions are based on my individual and unique experience. Based on my experience in 2016 I believe this line of feed has been amazing for my flock and I encourage you to try it too! There are also links to products I recommend from companies I have a referral relationship with. I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.

I was super excited to find out that my local Tractor Supply can order it so feeding backyard chickens the Purina® Organic Poultry Feed locally is hassle-free.

Even though my flock varies in size from the four hens and three turkeys I currently raise up to 150 different types of chickens, turkeys, peacocks and gunieas, I consider myself a backyard chicken owner as this is a hobby instead of business for me.

I spend a lot of time with my flock getting to know them and their individual personalities.

I even give them names.

The health and happiness of my flock matters and this is why I was thrilled to learn about the new line of Purina® Organic Poultry Feed.

Raising my flock on organic grains and was my first choice years ago when I started keeping poultry – but let’s face it, organic chicken feed was hard to find back then.

Purina is a well-known brand that has been nourishing flocks for more than 80 years.

It makes me feel good to know I am feeding my poultry the best product around and that the eggs and meat they produce for my table is organic.

This is very important to me and my family.

Why I Trust Purina® Organic Poultry Feed

The new Purina® Organic Poultry Feed is a complete line of certified USDA Organic chicken feeds that are made with all the ingredients you want and none that you don’t which is important to me.

For the past month I have been feeding my mixed flock with Purina® Organic Poultry Feed and I must say I am very happy with the results.

Both my chickens and turkeys love it – so it must taste good to them and they are thriving on it.

Purina is a well-known brand that I trust and the brand I turned too when I could not find organic feed for my chickens.

I chose Purina because of their standards which are:

          • vegetarian recipes
          • only the finest ingredients from an approved ingredient supplier list
          • no added antibiotics
          • proprietary infrared ingredient screening process
          • consistent nutrition from batch to batch
          • top research guidelines
          • Employee Quality Training Schools
          • stringent quality inspections

I love that the Purina® Organic Poultry Feed had no genetically modified ingredients, no animal by products, no fillers, no artificial preservatives and no growth hormones added*.

Making sure that my poultry eat grains with no genetically modified ingredients is extremely important to me.

I also do not want them to have growth hormones.

I absolutely love knowing that Purina is aware of what backyard chicken parents want – and don’t want – in the feed they give to their flocks and have made a line of feeds I feel good about recommending.

There are 3 different products available in the new Purina® Organic Poultry Feed line.

I tried 2 of these products – the Purina® Organic Layer Crumbles and the Purina® Organic Scratch Grains.

Which Purina® Organic Poultry Feed To Choose

For those just starting out with baby chicks, there is the Purina® Organic Starter-Grower Feed.

This feed is for chicks up to 18 weeks old.

I did not try this product as I am not raising chicks this year, but when I do raise chicks again I will be using it, however it would be a great choice for those starting an organic flock that is intended to produce eggs according to the Purina® Organic Chicken Feeds website.

In working with Purina, I have learned that the Purina® Organic Starter-Grower Feed is a complete diet so there is no need for supplements.

It has all the nutrients needed to help support immune heath, proper muscle development and beautifully colored feathers.

Getting your chicks off to a healthy start really does help – and of course you want a simple diet so you can spend more time enjoying them and less time trying to figure out what to feed them for optimal health.

The Purina® Organic Layer comes in both crumbles and pellets.

I chose the crumbles because it is what I prefer to feed.

I feel like the crumbles are a little more natural looking and easier for my poultry to eat.

I also feel there is less waste.

This is the feed you give once your chicks are 18 weeks old – and you continue to feed this for the life of your chickens which can be up to 20 years depending on their health.

The Purina® Organic Layer is intended for hens that are being raised for fresh, organic eggs.

It is a simple and complete diet that provides all the nutrients needed to help support immune health, strong shells and nutritious eggs.

Optimum egg production is what I want – and thanks to Purina I can now get that in an organic quality feed from a brand that is known for their quality feeds and value.

My chickens are a little slow to lay this year but the weather has not been optimal and I do have older hens.

They do love the feed and go after it quicker than their previous feed.

Their feathers look shiner and the colors are brighter especially my turkeys feathers.

I also noticed that some of the damaged feathers on the turkeys have re-grown.

Now while this is normal, we were given these birds two years ago and the feathers never seemed to improve until I started them on this feed.

Their eyes are bright and they look very healthy.

This tells me they are getting everything they need from their feed.

It is great to be able to use one kind of feed and not have to put out a lot of supplements or add vitamins to their water to make sure they get enough of all the essential nutrients they need.

I also tried the Purina® Organic Scratch Grains which is ideal for mixed flocks such as mine.

The amount of scratch grains given should not be more than 10% of their total diet.

It is intended to be used as a healthy snack. Purina® Organic Scratch Grains is a simple recipe of mixed grains that encourages natural pecking and feeding instincts.

I love tossing a handful on the ground in the morning and during times when I am sitting outside watching my chickens.

I am working towards teaching my birds to scratch and get more bugs into their diet.

Now I know this is instinct but for whatever reason the poultry I have now prefers to eat feed and not bugs.

They also prefer hanging out in the chicken coop which I am trying to discourage as I feel they need more time outdoors especially during the summer days when the chicken coop – even with a fan in the window – gets downright hot.

They love the Purina® Organic Scratch Grains so when I toss a handful on the ground they go after it until every last morsel is gone – and yes, they are learning to eat bugs which is one of the reasons why I raise poultry in the first place.

The corn in the scratch grains is cracked so it is easier for them to eat.

The other grains are whole just like what they would find in a field if they were foraging for their own food.
