Seed Starting

Germination Tips:

I planted seed of this during the early winter of 2003. I placed the seed in a peat pot filled with 3/4 potting soil and 1/4 vermiculite. The seed was pressed into the vermiculite and slightly covered.

The seeds had just begun to form roots on October 25, 2004. I potted them up into larger pots and have put them in my basement where hopefully the roots will continue to grow and I will have foliage by spring.

Fast forward to the spring of 2010. The young seedling has been growing in the front flower bed since 2005. I had one small pinkish colored bloom this spring. Hopefully the spring of 2011 will bring additional blooms.

bat plant tacca

Black Tacca - the bat plant.

Germination Tips:

Tacca was yet another plant whose seeds seemed to elude germination. Here is how I finally got seeds to germinate.

I sprinkled them on top of moist potting soil. I then sealed the container, keep it inside my house so that it would remain warm and waited.

The seeds germinated within a three month time period.

First flowers from seed grown Brunfelsia americana.

First flowers from seed grown Brunfelsia americana.

On December 4, 2004 I began soaking fresh seeds. They were in the water for about four days before I planted them directly on top of some vermiculite.

On December 23, 2004 the seed germinated.

The first flowers appeared on April 28, 2009!
