Well, we are trying tissue culture again. We made the Agar that the seeds will go in. We are sterilizing the seeds and putting them on top of the Agar. It can take up to one year for Orchid seed to germinate. I will let you know what happens. My seed ranges from around five years old to at least a year old. Keep your fingers crossed. Has anyone else used tissue culture to germinate Orchid seed?

This year I have decided to try to germinate some of my seeds in paper towels. Not only can I fit numerous paper towels in one of those plastic shoe boxes with a lid but I can check them every few days to see what has germinated. Once they do germinate I will pot them up into peat pots but in the meantime I think this will save a lot of room. This is just one of the many seeds that I have already put into a damp paper towel to give this a try. As always I would love to hear from anyone who is growing this.

Seed starting time is here again and today I started seeds of this. I am using a seed tray that came pre-filled with a seed starter mix. This is a larger seed so I covered it with a bit of vermiculite. This will go into my unheated greenhouse where hopefully the seeds will germinate.

I planted this seed using my usual methods. It is from the Sino-Himalayan Plant Association 2007 Seed Exchange. It was then put into the heated greenhouse to germinate. Has anyone grown this variety before?

Every year it seems that I get more unusual seeds that don?t get germinated due to lack of room for peat pots. This year I have decided to try to germinate some of my seeds in paper towels. I planted these seeds in the late fall or early winter of 2003. They were left outside in containers. They germinated on November 3, 2004.

I planted these seeds on October 26, 2004. They germinated on November 10, 2004. I used my standard ‘lay the seed on top of the vermiculite and make sure it is pushed in just enough to make contact’ method.
