@SheriARicherson: I love working in my herb garden. The scents are so relaxing. When I pick herbs I can hardly wait to go indoors to use them. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: One of my favorite spice blends is an Italian herb blend. Here is the recipe – 1/3 cup sea salt (optional)n #homesteadchat

@SheriARicherson: Looks like there are some tech issues on Twitter tonight. I keep seeing an over capacity message. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: To add some real zing to food, try making your own chili powder blend. I like mixing different types of peppers. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: When a recipe or spice blend calls for one type of herb – for example, garden sage – try using pineapple or honeydew sage #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Think about things pineapple would be good on – for example ham, then make a pineapple sage Italian herb blend. It’s #easy. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Never crush leaves, roots, berries or bark until you are ready to use them. This helps preserve the flavor. #homesteadchat

Welcome to the homestead projects photo day! This is a new part of the blog that will appear on the homepage, experimentalhomesteader.com, under featured posts. It allows you, the reader, to post photos you have taken of your homestead projects and will re-occur on the 6th day of every month.
Please post photos that you have taken – not ones you have come across on the internet.
So – let’s see all those photos! Go ahead and show off your creative talent. I’m looking forward to it. Let me get the ball rolling with a photo of one of my homestead projects.

@SheriARicherson: Welcome to tonight’s #homesteadchat. Our topic is making salves & tinctures. How many of you have made these before? #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Tinctures are one of the easiest items to make with ingredients right out of your own garden. Add vodka & you’re good to go. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Salves require some type of carrier – beeswax, cocoa butter, olive oil, jojoba oil, etc. The other ingredients you can grow. #homesteadchat

@SheriARicherson: Calendula hasnnhas anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, and astringent properties.n #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @Suburban_Farmer – because they are allowed to use organic pesticides, fertilizers, etc. and the label doesn’t mean 100% #homesteadchat

@featherchick: @SheriARicherson Thanks! I’m just lurking. I’ll pop in and out. Always interesting to see what #farm folks are talking about! #homesteadchat

@SheriARicherson: @NaturallyNan – how cool is that? Do make some smoked pepperoni. Mix it half and half with fresh pork sausage! Yum! #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Wondering what to do with all that lemon balm? Make a salve or tincture. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Lemon balm has a calming effect on mental stress and fatigue. It also works well on skin inflammations’. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: What are some of your favorite herbs? #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Here’s a really cool idea. Slice up citrus and put in a large glass jar. Cover it with vinegar and set in a sunny window. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: The vinegar will take on the citrus scent. Keep removing the citrus slices and adding new ones every 3 to 4 days. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Once the scent is strong enough to suit you, remove the citrus slices and use this in your washer rinse water as softener. #homesteadchat
@marcoscopic: @SheriARicherson I see, you’re referring to the label mess: 100% organic, organic, made with organic, organic ingredients #homesteadchat
@featherchick: Not an herb question but … does anyone at #homesteadchathave experience with infusing honey w/cinnamon? Just heard abt it. Yummy!
@SheriARicherson: @marcoscopic – yes, isn’t it horrible that we can’t count on what we buy to be 100% organic all the time? #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @featherchick – Yes, I do. Heat the honey slightly, add the cinnamon – or pour honey over cinnamon sticks – and you enjoy! #homesteadchat
@featherchick: @SheriARicherson @marcoscopic Also, some growers don’t want paperwork/regulation that comes w/USDA Organic labelling, right? #homesteadchat
@featherchick: @SheriARicherson Store it like that, then, w/cinnamon sticks in the honey? #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @featherchick – exactly. I do not have the certification. Too costly for small growers. Too much of a headache. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @featherchick – you can or you can remove them. I also make my own cinnamon and vanilla extracts. #homesteadchat
@featherchick: @SheriARicherson It’s what I’ve heard from a majority of #organic growers! Also, kind of costly, isn’t it? #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @marcoscopic – under $5,000.00 a year can be labeled organic per USDA rules. #homesteadchat
@featherchick: @SheriARicherson Thanks, going to give that a try tonight! #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @featherchick – $500 a year plus paperwork, etc. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @featherchick – you are welcome. Make sure to keep the cinnamon sticks submerged under the honey to avoid mold. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @featherchick – I always buy cinnamon sticks, then grind them for powder. So much better. Someday going to make my own sticks #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @marcoscopic – I always explain to people the only thing I use in my garden is compost and beneficial insects – nothing more #homesteadchat
@featherchick: @SheriARicherson OK, thanks. Also good to know. Green fuzzy honey is not appealing!! #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @featherchick – no, it is not. I believe you can whip the honey – after removing the sticks and have spun honey. #homesteadchat

@SheriARicherson: Welcome to tonight’s #homesteadchat on artisan bread making for the beginner. Please take a moment to meet and greet! #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: How many of you bake bread on a regular basis? Homemade bread is so much tastier than store bought – and better for you too! #homesteadchat

@SheriARicherson: Making bread is really easy too. Making artisan bread is just as easy – hemp hearts, flax seed, poppy seed, sesame seed – #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: A variety of different flours – amaranth, wheat, whole wheat, spelt, coconut flour, bran – mix and match – #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Simply use 1/4 cup of a flour you are unfamiliar with. Be sure to remove 1/4 cup of regular white flour. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Use whole flax seed on the bottom of your bread pan in place of oil. You still need to oil the pan corners and edges. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Anyone have a favorite grain they use on their artisan breads? #homesteadchat

@SheriARicherson: I love sprinkling the top of my homemade bread with a combination of poppy seed, whole amaranth seed and hemp hearts. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: When you line the bottom of the bread pan with whole flax seeds some of those remain on the bread when it is done. Yum! #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Making bread is so simple – here is another tip – combine ingredients in a bread machine – let it do the kneading…… #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Then remove the dough from the bread machine, place it in a glass bread pan, add your extras and bake in an oven. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: When the bread comes out of the oven, spread a generous amount of real butter over the top of the loaf. Make sure butter runs #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Also give the bread plenty of time to rise. I use a heat mat under the pan and let it rise until it’s 2 to 4 inches above pan #homesteadchat

@SheriARicherson: Here is my favorite homemade bread recipe – 1 1/2 cups water, 2 teaspoons sea salt – love the red or pink sea salt #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: 1/3 cup honey, 2 cups fresh ground white flour, 1/4 cup spelt, 1 1/2 cups wheat flour, 1/4 cup coconut flour #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: 2 tablespoons butter, 2 tablespoons dry milk, 1 teaspoon yeast – combine all ingredients in bread machine, set to dough cycle #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Do you have a favorite homemade bread recipe? #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @TheGardenChat @Aaerelon @MasterGardening @greenblessings @MulchMaven @RedneckRosarian – growing is the fun part! On #homesteadchatnow!
@SheriARicherson: The key is to experiment. If the bread doesn’t turn out, use it for livestock feed or wild bird or critter food. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: If you live in a state with cottage food laws you can sell your bread once you perfect it. Here it sells out at $3.00 a loaf. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Questions? Comments? Jump right in! #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: If you don’t have dry milk, use regular milk but decrease the amount of water. Example – +2 T milk = remove 2 T water #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: You can also freeze the bread you make or even freeze the dough to bake at a later date. I usually make fresh bread as needed #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: Thank you all for coming to the #homesteadchat tonight! Next week’s topic will be Herbal Holiday Craft Ideas #homesteadchat

@EthelGloves: @SheriARicherson Lime fabric softener sounds great, so much better than fake smells! #YourDayWithSusy #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @EthelGloves – Wal-Mart gave them to our local mission store. They sat, and sat, and sat. The lady said no one was taking #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @EthelGloves – next year I am going to make a recipe sheet that they can hand out to people with the limes. #homesteadchat
@EthelGloves: @SheriARicherson what a shame! great idea to hand out recipes, I’d at least make limeade! #YourDayWithSusyn #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @EthelGloves – slice the limes, cover with vinegar and set in a sunny window for several weeks – strain and use. #homesteadchat
@SheriARicherson: @SimmonsNaturals – that blend sounds really good too! I will have to try it the next time I make fish! #homesteadchat
@SimmonsNaturals: @SheriARicherson Never seen it at a nursery. Used to be able to get the dried root. Makes a fabulous teether, bumpy & numbing #homesteadchat
